Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake and Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, lead this year’s British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), with seven and six nominations.
I, Daniel Blake topped the list of nominations in this year’s BIFA with seven nominations including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, as well as Best Actor and Actress nods for Dave Johns and Hayley Squires, who are also competing against each other in the Most Promising Newcomer category.
Rachel Tunnard’s feature about loss, Adult Life Skills, and Notes on Blindness, the incredible visual and aural experience about a man’s exacerbating blindness, also received six nominations.
Andrea Arnold’s coming-of-age road-trip film, American Honey, was recognised in six categories including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress for Sasha Lane’s breakthrough performance. Also notable are Toni Erdmann, Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea, Hunt for the Wilderpeople in the Best International Independent Film category.
Some of Methods Unsound’s favourite comedies from this year’s London Film Festival have also been nominated. Including Julian Barrat’s perfectly judged Mindhorn, and Alice Lowe’s excellent dark thriller Prevenge.
And in a bold move, the heroically insane The Greasy Strangler was nominated in the Discovery Award category. Hooray! Things were in danger of being TOO normal for a minute there.
