margaret glaspy - you and i

Here’s our regular round up of the best new songs this week you need in your ears over the coming days.

This week in the mix we have yet more Swedish superstars in the making as well as some Latvian twins making colourful electronica.

Cilia – Hardcore Heartbreak

2015 brought us a pair of Toves (Lo and Styrke) and 2016 has seen Zara Larsson catapult to the top of the charts all over the world. However there’s another Scandi sister on their heels and earlier this week Cilia threw her hat in the ring for potential pop tune of the summer. ‘Hardcore Heartbreak’ is a classy bit of electropop with a stunning vocal.

MARKS – The Modern Life

If dark synth noir is your thing (think Class Actress or Profiles) then MARKS will be right up your strasse. This is the brainchild of LA’s Lindsay Marcus – producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Here’s the album’s title track for your listening pleasure.

Margaret Glaspy – You And I

Emotions & Math is the delightful title of Margaret Glaspy’s album which is out this very day. White Stripes comparisons are inevitable after seeing this video (loving the all red get up) but in truth she’s more of a solo Sleater-Kinney with walloping pop hooks.

DVINES – Set It On Fire

We are presuming it’s a dancefloor DVINES are setting on fire. They certainly pack a pop punch across their five track Solid Colours EP, which has just been released. These Latvian twins follow in the footsteps of some other fabulous sisters in pop like Say Lou Lou, Tegan & Sara and, er, Gayle & Gillian (‘All Mixed Up’ – a lost SAW classic with the thinnest vocals in history!).

Maja Francis – Come Companion

Maja’s debut EP might just be the best of the year thus far. With tunes as strong as ‘Last Days Of Dancing’ and ‘Come Companion’ we can only speculate how good a full length album might be. The newly released video for ‘Come Companion’ is the prettiest clip you’ll see right now. Maja’s world of glittery body stickers, purple rivers and strawberry milkshake bubbles is totally endearing and one I very much want to be part of.
