Five best new songs this week: Cassius, Chromatics, Flock of Dimes & more

30 August, 2016 — by Lee Bennett0

chromatics dear tommy

It’s been a pretty big week in music – from Frank Ocean ruling the charts and the airwaves just about everywhere to Beyonce totally bossing it at the VMAs.

There’s also plenty of other good new under-the-radar music you need to be aware of too, and we couldn’t be more chuffed with the batch of tunes we have for you this week.

Cassius featuring Cat Power and Mike D – Action

The Cassius guys just released a rather stunning new album called Ibifornia. Whoever thought it was a good idea to get Cat Power to channel her inner funk goddess is a GENIUS (in the album liner notes they quite rightly refer to her as Chaka Cat Power). The extended version of album tracks is quite simply the summer funk jam you have been waiting for – so start playing it on a loop immediately.

Chromatics – Dear Tommy

Could it possibly be that Johnny Jewel is finally ready to share the long-promised Dear Tommy album with us? This ‘forthcoming’ Chromatics album has taken on a cult status thanks to its lengthy delay, but this week the bloody-but-beautiful Neon Demon-esque video for the title track appeared. However in a Facebook post Johnny suggested we wouldn’t be getting the album in September and also not in 2017 either (after people started guessing the release date). I am so hoping that means a release somewhere between October and December 2016. Pushing this one back into 2018 would be too cruel.

Saffari – Your Love Is a Lazer

So firstly have a butchers at that artwork – divine right? Secondly, enter into this one knowing there’s a tongue planted firmly in a cheek yet is also expertly crafted from a love of some popfabulous 80s tuneage. Starting like Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ before spinning into classic Dead Or Alive with some Eurocheese melted over the top. The hook on this chorus is so massive – just surrender to Saffari and don’t feel guilty about it.

Flock Of Dimes – Everything Is Happening Today

We only have two tracks to go on but Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner has us super psyched for her album as Flock Of Dimes. Following the rather epic ‘Semaphore’ we now have ‘Everything Is Happening Today’ which is not dissimilar in either quality or feel to Chairlift’s recent Moth album’. The wait is almost over as Flock of Dimes’ debut record If You See Me Say Yes will be with us on 23 September.

isle&fever – Far Away

Between their Soundcloud (“summer days and disco nights”) and Bandcamp (“stuck in a basement, designing a future”) bios, this duo have nailed their sound in a little more than a few words. Their new tune ‘Far Away’ is perfect both for quality ray-catching sunlounger times as it is for the middle of a dancefloor at 1am on a balmy night sometime in 2028.
