Best new food to eat in London this week: Honest Kebabs, Lobos Soho, Hipchips & Smokestak

27 November, 2016 — by Toni Ratcliff0

Oh, hai guys. So what’s new on the London food news scene this week, you ask? Well how about Honest Burger launching Honest Kebabs, excellent tapas from Lobos in Soho, Smokestak resting their weary meat bones in Shoreditch. Oh, and a fucking crisp restaurant?!

You can’t win em all…

Honest Burger are launching Honest Kebabs!

So this is a pretty good start: the folks at Honest Burger are expanding their empire beyond the circular form of burgers to include kebabs! Apparently the idea started when they built two doner grills for Meatopia a couple of months back and created Beef Steak Doner kebabs made with aged chuck steak, garlic sauce, pickles, green onion, pecorino, chipotle gravy and toasted khobez flatbreads. Unsurprisingly the results were so good they decided to make it a permanent feature.

Honest Kebabs will officially be launching in Dalston in 2017 but the team are offering you the chance to sample the kebaby beauties every Wednesday and Thursday from this week (30th November) in their Dalston branch alongside their usual burger menu. We’ll see you down there – extra chilli sauce on mine, mate.

Lobos Tapas Soho opens

Like Spanish food and piles of pork? Great! Because the dudes behind Lobos Meat & Tapas in Borough Market opened their second Lobos tapas restaurant in Soho a couple of weeks back. Expect to see excellent classic tapas dishes as well as more Iberico Pork than you can shake a pig at. And as an added bonus you can even book a table at the new Soho branch too, so no more standing out in the cold freezing off your croquetas.

Hipchips: a fucking crisp restaurant opens…

Winning the award for the stupidest thing I have heard this year is Hipchips, a restaurant serving only fried potato chips and dips which opened in Soho last week. Now I have been accused of liking a lot of stupid hipster things before (see the donut burger or a cheese toastie burger for example) but even I draw the line at a restaurant serving only bleeding crisps! However, if this is something that appeals to you then you might be interested to know that you can pick the type of potato for your crisps and then select between two and six savoury or sweet dips to join them. Yes, that’s right – sweet dips, like chocolate salted caramel or crème brûlée. Mmmm… delicious? (*Reaches for a bucket to vom int0*)

Boom Shack opens in Brixton

Following on from the success of Boom Burger in Notting Hill, Josh de Lisser opened his second Jamaican restaurant in Brixton this weekend, Boom Shack. Full to the brim with laid-back Jamaican vibes, expect the cocktails to be flowing and the menu to be spicy, with sandwiches such as Scotch bonnet chilli beef with cheese, bacon jam (made in-house) and jerk mayonnaise on offer. An awesome new spot for a lazy Sunday brunch, no doubt.

Smokestak opens permanent restaurant in Shoreditch

Ok, so I know this is pretty old news now but Smokestak is so f-ing good that I just had to mention it anyway in case there was anyone out there that was not aware yet! Kings of barbecue meat, Smokestak, have been kicking ALL arses at various pop-ups and street food venues across London for the last few years, and at the beginning of November they opened their first permanent restaurant in Shoreditch. Halleluah! No doubt their menu will be as fucking awesome as it always is, and then some. Run, don’t walk, to this one.
