Six best new songs of the week (8th March): Lorde, Ibibio Sound Machine, Girlpool

8 March, 2017 — by Christopher Ratcliff0

This week’s best new songs round-up is a really good one. I know that makes it sound like previous weeks’ round-ups somehow haven’t been up to scratch – but believe me, this week’s list makes all the other ones sound like I was just choosing whatever farty crap arrived in my inbox that had the stupidest punny band name.

This week: Ibibio Sound Machine, Lorde, Spoek Mathambo, Girlpool, The Coathangers and Tonstartssbandht. Sadly, the adolescent Tina Turner cover band Teenaturner will have to wait till next week.

Ibibio Sound Machine – Joy (Idaresit)

Released a few days ago, Ibibio Sound Machine’s second album Uyai is a spectacular, genre-busting record filled with West African funk, electro and Eno Williams’ awesome vocals. I’ve been listening to the album track ‘Joy (Idaresit)’ all week – adding those post-punk guitars to the above mix makes for something truly thrilling.

The Coathangers – Captain’s Dead

Fuck yeah, The Coathangers are releasing a new EP, called Parasite, in June and this teaser track ‘Captain’s Dead’ couldn’t arrive at a better time. “Easy come and easy go, adios amigo” will hopefully take on a bigger meaning sooner rather than later.

Spoek Mathambo – I Found U (feat Kajama & Fantasma)

The South African producer, songwriter & filmmaker Spoek Mathambo has a new project called Mzansi Beat Code out April 14th, and ‘I Found You’ is the utterly lovely first single. This one makes my heart feel nice.

Lorde – Green Light

Just give this song 48 seconds of your time, and then it will give you something so wonderful in return. It just keeps getting better too.

Girlpool – 123

Girlpool release their second LP, Powerplant, on May 12th and holy crap ‘123’ is a hell of an introduction. Never has dream-pop sounded more powerful and more stirring.

Tonstartssbandht — Breathe

Because you don’t seem to be in a hurry to get off anywhere soon, here’s 12 minutes of exploratory blues rock. It’s heady, intangible stuff from the brothers Andy and Edwin White – but right now at 10:30pm, as I drain the last of my Mezcal, it’s perfect.

Okay, great hustle gang. I’m proud of you all. Now hit the showers and I’ll see you on the field next week. In the meantime, here’s an ever-expanding Spotify playlist featuring all the best new music of March so far…
